Welcome to the March Newsletter!

A couple of favorite games were played in February.  Greg reports on the Titan game of 2/15:

To jump start the game, it was decided that each player would be given 3 of each base creature (i.e. centaur, gargoyle, and ogre) instead of the usual 2, and of course a titan and an angel.  You started in randomly determined tower hexes with any number of legal stacks with a limit of no more than one lord per stack.  This "twist" provided some war-bears and minotaurs very early in the game.  (On a personal note, I recommend trying it as an alternate, it was quite interesting.)  There were four players that participated, Mike, Nate, Greg, and Joe.  By luck of the draw Mike, Nate, and Joe started in adjacent tower hexes, while Greg started with a buffer tower on either side.  The first hour passed with little to note, except better-than-usual recruiting due to the "modified" starting rule. The excitement began with Mike recruiting a giant in the Tundra and dropping down onto Greg's side of the board.  The very next move sent a 7-stack of Greg's against Mike's 6-stack titan.  Due to timing and dumb luck Greg was unable to "summon" an angel and the battle resulted in total annihilation for both sides.  Greg did not get points for Mikes titan stack, but did get roughly 90 points for the remained of Mike's units.  The game went on for a couple more hours with each side roughly even.  Then Nate jumped Joe's titan stack (presumably without prior knowledge), and managed to weaken the stack to the titan and a troll.  This appeared to be the end of Joe, but the next few turns allowed him to move his titan out of danger and do some recruiting.  Joe then reciprocated by jumping Nate's titan stack and weakening it significantly.  At that point Nate and Joe's combined forces were about an even match for Greg, and both Nate and Joe had a known and vulnerable titan stack.   The game was called at about 10PM declaring Greg the king of titan land.

The location of the Risk tournament is TBD; both our normal location (Bldg 33 cafeteria) and usual backup location (Bldg 33, rm 201) are unavailable.  Mike is looking for an alternate backup location.  Also, Mike is suggesting History of the World as a possible alternative to the Risk Tournament (depending on people’s moods on March 29th). He is sponsoring History of the World on March 15th as a practice session.

Check out Greg’s Top Ten List of Favorite Games in the Games Review Section.  I will publish people’s top ten lists in the order I receive them.  In coming months, I will also review several games that I played for the first time at the Fantasy Shop Games Day.  I recommend Games Day as an excellent opportunity to test drive games you’ve never played, or even heard of, before.

Email me if you’d like to sponsor a game.  The next available meeting date is May 10th.

Since this is the club newsletter, please feel free to email me any contributions you may have.  In particular, web links for Link of the Month, game reviews or any game you’d like added to the Wish List.

 The Blurbs:

Wings of War: Wings Of War is a game of aerial combat in world war one.  The aircraft are small cards with a top view of the airplane.  Each aircraft has a deck of cards with each card representing a maneuver that the aircraft is capable of.  The maneuver card is placed in front of the aircraft card and then the tail of the aircraft card is placed as indicated by the maneuver card.  Arcs of fire are indicated on the aircraft card as well as damage ratings.

Nate has maneuver decks to support eight players.  Depending on table sizes available and number of participants, we will play either a balloon busting scenario or just a free for all furball.

History of the World: History of the World (HotW) can be played by 2-6 players, but plays better with at least 4 players.  HotW works under the assumption that all empires eventually fade and that the only things differentiating great empires from lesser ones is how much territory they conquer and how long it takes for their civilizations to disappear. To that end, the game is played in epochs, with every player handling a new empire during each; yes, some empires will be stronger than others, but a few clever mechanisms largely balance that out. At the end of each player's turn during an epoch, that player scores points for all their forces (from the current and previous empires) remaining on the board.
