Adventure Game Club Newsletter
July 2007
“Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. Impossible to maneuver. Situation excellent. I am attacking!”
Greetings and Salutations:
Welcome to the July Newsletter! A water main break forced the closure of Building 33 and cancellation of the games meeting on June 7th, but protected us all from the zombie horde. Be on your guard, however, for I suspect the zombie horde may reappear when we least expect it! Or in October...
Seven players vied for dominance during the BattleTech tournament. Greg limped off the field of battle with a first place victory. Joe lay headless on the field but still came in second.
This month, I’m sponsoring Settlers of Catan (could someone bring the 5-6 player expansion incase we have 5-6 players?) and Mike is sponsoring 1870. Civilizing a wild island and building a rail empire. What could be better?
Security gate confusion (see below) is not as bad as I thought it might be last month, but leave a little extra time to get to the games meeting just in case.
Gate Schedules Change at Buildings 32, 33, 34
From Monday, June 4, to Monday, August 6, Gate 31, off McDonnell Blvd., will be closed while improvements are made at this entry point.
To ease the impact during this gate closure, the following gate operations in Tract II North will be in effect:
· Gate 32, off McDonnell Blvd., will be open 24 hours a day.
· Gate 27B, off McDonnell Blvd., will be open for truck deliveries and inspections 24 hours a day.
· Gate 34A, off McDonnell Blvd., will be open during peak hours, Monday through Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
· Gate 33 will remain closed.
Thank you for planning your entry into these facilities accordingly. If you have questions, please contact Lt. Dutro Campbell at Uniformed Security Services, 314-234-3811.
Email me if you’d like to sponsor a game. The next available meeting date is Aug. 9th.
Since this is your club newsletter, please feel free to email me any contributions you may have. In particular, web links for Link of the Month, game reviews or any game you’d like added to the Wish List.

Link(s) of the Month:
Mike Guntly provides this month’s link: http://megamek.sourceforge.net/
He describes it as “BattleTech board game on computer. Turn based, not real time. Downloadable. Open Source. Free. Multi-platform. Solitaire vs. computer AI or networked. Customized units possible, but I haven't gone there yet.”
I haven’t checked out the site yet, but I imagine I will before the next tournament.
Paul’s RPG thang:
Paul reports that, “We are hoping to RPG in both July and August, although dates are still TBD at this time.”
Contact Paul Oberlin for further details.
Less lame DISCLAIMER: The RPG group is not *officially* associated with the BAGC.
Mark’s calendar of Fantasy Shop events:
The June Game Day had 75 in attendance (new record). The next Game Day is scheduled for August 25th.
The O'Fallon (MO) Fantasy Shop is closing (last day is this Saturday, July 7th). They are having clearance sale (I got 40% off board games last night). The Manager of this location (Mike Brodeur) is taking over as manager of the St. Charles location. Scott Blumenkamp (the current manager) is switching to part time.
The Kirkwood location is moving (not sure when). They are moving further south on Kirkwood/Lindbergh road across street from Ronnie's cinema.
Next auction at the shop is scheduled for August 10th-12th.
Comic book back issue sale is the weekend of July 7th (not game related but the promo/game area of shop will pretty much be wiped out for the weekend)
The Blurbs:
Settlers of Catan: In Settlers of Catan, players compete to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine the current production on the island. Players collect raw materials to build up their civilizations to gain enough victory points to win the game. The tile based map guarantees no two games play exactly the same.
1870: "1870" is a game of railroad building and operating in the central plains of the U.S. 2-6 players open railroad companies, lay track, and operate their companies' trains to generate revenue. At the same time, through buying and selling shares of the railroad companies and how the companies distribute their earnings, they are affecting the stock market prices of their companies' shares. Most assets wins. For those who are cubically or other ways) challenged, there are no random elements in this game. Everything that occurs is dictated by player actions.
Review of the Month: Niagara
By Eric Kline
I played Niagara at the Games Day in February. It was a neat little game that I’d recommend. Here’s a description from Boardgamegeek:
“Niagara is set in the not particularly safe world of rushing waterfalls. In the late 18th Century, the Shawnee and Iroquois Indians pointed white Desperadoes, Mercenaries and Adventurers in the direction of hidden caches of valuable jewels, in the hopes of turning them against one another and away from their territorial expansion ambitions. Players play as some of those Adventurers.
The first player to be able to claim ownership of five jewels is the winner. But the chase after the riches has some snags. The speed of the river is always changing, since the speed depends on the decisions of the players and the changeable weather. And once a canoe goes over the walls, it's a hefty investment to replace it. And there are also the Desperadoes to contend with, who aren't above trying to plunder the riches from Adventurers returning home. Niagara is distinguished by an innovative movement mechanic as well as a beautiful three-dimensional rendering of the waterfall setting.”
Wish List (games that club members wish other club members would sponsor at a club meeting):
- Settlers of the Stone Age, Battle Stations!, Attack!, New England, Illuminati, The Traders of Genoa, The Settlers of Zarahemla, 1870
