Adventure Game Club Newsletter

February 2007

“That’s how life is, you finally get a cookie and somebody else eats it”

Greetings and Salutations:

Welcome to the February Newsletter!  I want to thank everyone who provided feedback regarding the BAGC newsletter survey.  The results were favorable and all sections of the newsletter will remain.  One suggestion I will adopt is to omit any section for which there is no content in a given month.  I will try to fill every section with content each month, but that is not an easy task and I appreciate any assistance y’all can offer.  If you have anything you would like to include or can contribute a Link of the Month or game review, please submit your contribution.

One respondent to the survey wanted to know what games other club members owned and enjoy.  Sort of a review of games by way of a Top Ten list (exact quote was: I had seen some game reviews in the past with the club, and being a member of the club have played a few games. Those that I liked and I purchased.  Just thought that some 'club' game reviews would be a nice way to help me and others choose what to play and purchase.  My thought was may be "Top Ten" best board games, and a "Top Ten" best of... etc.  The club has some very good and well informed game players and they have much more experience then I do. I like to hear their opinions.).  I’d like everyone to consider submitting a Top Ten list of games.  I’ll kick it off with a Top Ten list of my favorite games.  I also have a Top Ten list of games I’ve never sponsored at a club meeting.  Other ideas could include Top Ten list of: 2-player games, party games, strategic games, tactical games, games by a specific game company, card games, computer games, unowned games, etc.  Use your imagination.  I hope that this might encourage people to request games be sponsored at future game club meetings.  I will publish these Top Ten lists in the Review of the Month section.

Mike informed me that the Bldg 33 cafeteria will be unavailable for the Risk tournament.  An alternative location is TBD.  Also, Mike is suggesting History of the World as a possible alternative to the Risk Tournament (depending on people’s moods on March 29th). He is sponsoring History of the World on March 15th as a practice session.

The games calendar is filling up quickly and the next open meeting is April 12th.  Email me if you’d like to sponsor a game.

Finally, I’d like to thank the TOP SEC for their efforts in helping develop a Tournament Prize Schedule (see below).  The table was designed to accommodate multiple first place winners during the Risk tournament, if more than 6 players show up, for which all prizes will be pooled and divided evenly among the game winners.

The Blurbs:

Puerto Rico: In Puerto Rico, each player utilizes different roles (Mayor, Captain, Settler, Trader, Prospector, Craftsman, or Builder) to score the most victory points with their colony. Players can act on every turn of the game, allowing them to choose between shipping goods for points or building an impressive city. Players must manage their colonists, erect a variety of buildings, build up their plantation, and sell or ship goods. With dozens of options, Puerto Rico is a streamlined game that can be played in about two hours and handles three to five players.

Titan:

This classic game of the Fantasy Monster Slugathon is a standby from the Avalon Hill of yore. The game still has a very devoted following, which is a tribute to the depth of the various strategies and approaches. The game is divided into two realms, the masterboard and the battleboards. On the masterboard legions of mythical creatures roam about trying to recruit bigger and badder monsters and kill opposing legions in the process. When a combat occurs, the space is 'blown-up' by moving the action to the corresponding battleboard type. After lots of dice are tossed, the victor is returned to the masterboard with the spoils of war: points. The points mean little in and of themselves, but they are used to augment one small character in the game. That particular character is the leader of the players' legions: the titan. This is the player's alter-ego, and the Titans' fate and the players' fate are one and the same.
